With the advent of Power, Microsoft Apps enables more teams to create unique collaborative experiences in a digital world.

Designed to meet the growing demand for low-code and no-code functionality, the Power Apps ecosystem is a suite of apps, tools, and connectors designed to help you build apps for your small business. With Microsoft’s pre-built templates, you don’t necessarily need existing technical knowledge to use these ready-to-go tools.

With more teams working in remote and hybrid environments than ever before, staff rely on a multitude of apps to continue operating productively in any environment. Here’s what you need to know about creating a custom app for Microsoft Teams.

Tap into the Microsoft Teams Dataverse

Microsoft’s low-code application environment means you can build your own custom tools and automation to empower staff members wherever they are. Rather than having to wait for another developer to create the perfect tool for your specific needs, you can design the technology you need yourself.

To enable this, Microsoft has introduced the Microsoft Dataverse for Teams. The dataverse is an integrated solution for Microsoft Teams, allowing users to build custom apps and workflows using Power Apps and Power Automate. Essentially, you get a set of tools ranging from data storage to various crucial data types and one-click deployment all rolled into one.

Each team in Microsoft Teams can only have one Dataverse for that collaboration environment. Dataverse stores manage and share team-specific insights, workflows, chatbots, and apps created with Power Apps.

The updated Power Apps app in Teams provides an integrated experience for app markers, so you can start building workflows and editing apps in your collaborative tool. Once you’re done creating and editing, it only takes one click to quickly publish your app and share it with your whole team.

Get started with apps in Microsoft Teams

There are several ways to use apps created by Power Apps in Teams. The best solution is to install the Power Apps personal app in Microsoft Teams. You can do this by opening Microsoft Teams and then clicking “More apps added”. After installing Power Apps, you can pin it to your Microsoft Teams sidebar so you can access the app whenever you want.

To start building your app using the personal app in Teams, click Power App, then click “Create”. Choose which team will own or host the app and give the app a name.

If this is the first app created for a selected team, you will need a new Dataverse for that team. Microsoft will create the Dataverse for you, so don’t worry. It can take Teams a little while to organize all your data. Once you have your dataverse:

Following:

  • Select “Create a new table” on the left side of Power Apps Studio to create a table
  • Add columns with specific types – text, dates and numbers – which will help you later
  • Create choice columns with option lists and lookups to create relationships with other tables
  • Start filling in rows of data, just like you would a table in Excel.

To ensure anyone can build an app in Microsoft Teams, Microsoft offers a range of templates. These are specially designed apps for common app templates that all team members can easily install. You can use a template without any modifications or customize and extend the template as much as you want.

To choose a template, tap the “All Templates” option in Power Apps, and you’ll see a range of standard options, including a help desk or apps to organize contacts. Although you can create an application from scratch, it is a a bit more complex process.

Customizing and publishing your app

Once you’re done with your board or selected your template, it will automatically be added to your Microsoft Teams app gallery. Once your Power App is ready, you can easily add it to Teams. You can do this by selecting the team and channel where you want your Power App to go. After that, click the “+” icon at the top of a Teams instance bar to add a tab.

Your Dataverse will have added your new app to your ecosystem for you, so you should be able to find your app in the list of available tabs to add to Teams. Click on the application you created and click on the save button. You and other users of your Microsoft Teams instance should be able to see the app loading in the Teams window.

If you want, you can click the globe icon at the top of the Microsoft Teams page, near the “tabs” section, to open your app in its own space. Other top bar commands can also let you put the app in full screen, start an app-based chat, or refresh the app. You can also remove an app from your Microsoft Teams installation at any time by clicking on the app name and choosing “Remove”.

You should also be able to install any apps you build using Power Apps directly from the Microsoft Teams store if you run into any issues. In the Power Platform admin center, you’ll have more control over your environments and get real-time self-help recommendations. The Power Platform admin center will also allow you to modify user roles and data loss prevention policies.

Because of the Microsoft Teams-based tab for Power Apps, your co-workers should be able to access and modify app features at any time, based on their user permissions.

Twitter Blue was announced last year as a paid subscription with bonus benefits for Twitter users. However, not all features of Twitter Blue are available on Android, with some remaining exclusive to the iOS version of the service. The ability to set custom app icons is one such feature. Twitter finally announces the arrival of this feature for Android subscribers of its service.

As usual, the company shared the news via a tweet while showcasing the options available for app icons. In addition to the default Twitter app icon, users have seven additional options to choose from, which will be available year-round. The company will also offer “seasonal” app icons, which will be live for a limited time. As XDA notes, these icons can be related to an event, season, or something relevant, depending on the time of year.

Twitter Blue costs $2.99/month, but some features are not yet available on Android or web versions

While Twitter expects some traction from its new paid subscription, it’s too early to tell if the company has succeeded. But it’s clear that iOS users have access to more Twitter Blue benefits than Android or web users. Although this is changing over time, the disparity has made Android users hesitant to try Twitter Blue.

Twitter only charges $2.99/month for Blue, making it one of the cheapest plans out there. Users have access to a handful of features, including the ability to edit tweets right after sending them. Subscribers also get some of Twitter’s new features before anyone else, thanks to Twitter Labs.

Some of the first features we’ve seen so far include the ability to upload 10-minute videos and pin DM conversations for easier access. Twitter recently made the latter feature available to non-Blue users as well. However, the process is somewhat complex on Android compared to iOS.

Pinning conversations on Android requires holding down the conversation and selecting the “Pin conversation” option that appears in the pop-up window. But users can only pin six conversations at the moment. It is not clear if this is a temporary limitation.

There’s a lot to like and dislike about Twitter Blue. But based on his progress so far, it’s safe to say he’s been disappointing for the most part.

In our modern day and age, services are slowly adopting the subscription model. And that’s completely understandable, because the continuous development and maintenance of the platforms we use comes at a cost. When a company offers both free and premium tiers of its service, paid subscribers usually unlock additional features and capabilities to entice them to stick around. Twitter Blue launched last year and slowly added new exclusive features to gain more followers and retain existing followers. However, many of these benefits remain iOS-only for now, including themes and personalized browsing. However, the company has been working to bring some of them to Android. Starting today, Twitter Blue subscribers can finally use custom app icons on their Android phones. The feature was restricted to iPhone users since its launch.

The company announced in a tweet that paid Android users can now select from the various custom app icons available in Settings. Besides the original icon, Twitter offers seven additional ones that remain available throughout the year. Most of them are the same icon with a solid background of a certain color. On top of that, Twitter Blue followers receive seasonal icons that expire on specified dates. These icons usually reflect special events, annual celebrations or a season of the year.

Is Twitter Blue worth it?

Since some features of Twitter Blue are not available on Android, it may be unfair for users of this platform to pay the same fees as iOS. While $2.99/month is a low price we wouldn’t hesitate to shop elsewhere, the service just isn’t worth it. We understand it is still in its infancy and more are expected to come in the future. However, the fact that paying this fee doesn’t even remove ads or sponsored posts from the app can be a deal breaker for many of us, including me. I already canceled my subscription after using it for a few months, despite its low price. And some of my colleagues also agree that exclusives aren’t tempting enough.

Are you a Twitter Blue subscriber? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments section below.

The most popular feature of iOS 14 quickly became the new widgets that can add a personalized touch to your iPhone. Additionally, iOS 14’s personalized aesthetic has become a huge trend. We have already covered how to create ultra custom widgets with Widgetsmith. The other great part is that your app icons tie everything together. Follow the instructions to create an iOS 14 aesthetic with custom app icons.

If you opt for an iOS 14 aesthetic, you can give your iPhone home screen a truly unique look. There are several ways to do this: you can find the icons/images you want to use yourself, or you can buy a set of icons that have the aesthetics you want. We’ll cover some of the options below, as well as the whole process of using the Shortcuts app to create your new custom app icons.

How to Customize iPhone App Icons

  • Before you begin, it’s a good idea to find an icon for your new shortcut. There are many sources of icons online (Flaticon, for example), or if you are artistic and/or ambitious, you can create your own. Whether you’re using someone else’s or your own, save the image to Photos.
  • OK let’s get started. Find and tap the Shortcuts app. It is pre-installed; If you can’t see it right away on your home screen, swipe left until you’re in the App Library and start typing “Shortcuts” in the top search bar.
  • Once inside the app, tap the “plus” sign in the top right corner. Type the name of your new shortcut at the top, then tap “Add Action”
  • There are a lot of cool things to try in Shortcuts. But for now, what we want to do is change the app icons. Type “Open App” in the search bar, then tap the “Open App” link.
  • Tap the word “Application” which appears (rather faintly) next to the word “Open”. You will see a list of your apps; choose the one you want to customize.
  • Now tap on the blue symbol in the upper right corner. You will return to the Shortcuts page.
  • Tap “Add to Home Screen”.
  • You will now see a preview of the icon (which will be a standard, uninteresting icon that Shortcuts adds automatically). Don’t worry, we’ll improve it.
  • Tap the icon under “Home screen name and icon”. You will have the option to take a photo, choose a photo or choose a file. Assuming you’ve already saved an image to Photo, tap “Choose Photo” and select the photo you want to use.
  • If you chose an existing photo, a highlighted area will indicate which part of the photo will appear as an icon; you can move the photo around until you are happy with the section shown. Tap “Choose” in the lower right corner.
  • You will now see your new icon. If you haven’t added a name to your new shortcut, you can still do so here by typing the name next to the icon.
  • Ready? Tap Add in the top right corner.
  • You should see your new custom icon on your home screen. Congratulations!
  • You may see two new icons on your home screen: one with the boring first icon and one with your wonderful new icon. If so, long-press the icon you don’t want, then select “Delete bookmark”. Remember that this (and the other you created) is a bookmark/shortcut, not the original.
  • You can also hide the original app icon so that only the new one is visible. (You don’t want to remove it entirely, of course; that would remove the app.)
  • Long-press the original app icon and select “Edit Home Screen”.
  • Tap the minus sign. In the context menu, tap “Remove from home screen”. The original icon will not be deleted, it will only be hidden; you can still find it in the app library.

Apple is finally allowing developers to create their own custom offer codes for in-app subscriptions.

In 2020, Apple introduced the ability to generate offer codes for in-app subscriptions. However, there were two major limitations: they were randomly generated and were single-use.

On the Apple Developer website, the company announcement that it lifts both limitations so that developers can create offer codes like BRINGONSUMMER that can be used for as long – or, in fact, as short – as desired.

As a reminder, there are now two types of promotional codes:

  • Single Use Codes: Unique alphanumeric offer codes. Redeemable on iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 or later.
  • Custom Codes: Custom offer codes that can be used by multiple users. Redeemable on iOS 14.1 or iPadOS 14 or later.

Each app is allowed to create up to 150,000 codes per quarter. Codes are redeemable through a user doing it manually in your app or through a new convenient direct URL.

Customers eligible to redeem your code can be defined in App Store Connect and can include new, active, and expired users.

Apple believes the enhanced functionality will make it “even easier to acquire, retain and win back subscribers.”

The company has released a comprehensive guide on setting up offer codes here.

In June, Apple announced at WWDC21 that it will eventually allow app developers to create custom product pages on the App Store. This allows them to present different content, such as icons, screenshots, and descriptions, to different people. Developers will have access to statistics based on each product page to find out what appeals to users the most. In addition, they will have the option to share personalized pages through unique links to highlight certain events or in-app features at a specific time. The Cupertino giant is now rolling out these new additions to all registered developers around the world.

As 9to5Mac reports, Apple has share a post on its developer website announcing the availability of these features. Developers around the world should be able to use them today. The company explains what each of the new features aims and does:

  • Optimization of the product page. Try other versions of your app’s product page with different icons, screenshots, and app previews to see which one performs the best. Each version is presented to a randomly selected percentage of eligible App Store users and the results appear in App Analytics, so you can set the best performing to show everyone on the App Store.
  • Custom product pages. Create additional versions of your app’s product page to highlight specific features or content, discoverable through unique URLs you share. Almost 90% of mobile Internet consumption is through smartphone applications.

In addition, the reason number one why most of the users uninstall an app is the lack of usability and usefulness.

While the above stats may seem like they don’t connect and wrap up, they do imply the importance of application development and indicate how crucial it is to ensure the quality of the process and the results.

A smart way to do this is to choose custom app development for your business. Are you wondering why not low-code development? This article talks about it in detail.

Here are a bunch of reasons why it makes sense to prioritize custom app development over low-code application development. But first, let’s find out what we really mean by low-code and custom application development.

What is low-code development?

Low-code development is a process of mobile application development that uses low-code development platforms that include various tools that help build mobile applications through a drag-and-drop interface.

While low-code platforms help build applications in a short period of time, ease of access comes with a variety of drawbacks that need to be considered before starting a project.

What is custom application development?

Custom application development is the process of creating software for a specific set of users, functions, or organizations. The idea of building custom code applications is to develop software that meets users’ needs and expectations as closely as possible.

Custom apps are usually built from scratch and offer limitless customization options.

Why choose custom application development over low-code application development?

1. Low-code can encourage inexperienced development

While not all low-code application developers are inexperienced, this is a route often preferred by people who may lack technical know-how or expertise.

Of course, a custom code developer developing your business application from scratch may demand higher pay compared to our low-code friend. But, this cost will bring the valuable experience and availability of a talented custom application development team who will take care of your business application development closely.

2. Low-Code lacks freedom of design and functionality

As low-code apps are based on pre-developed models or low-code platforms, there isn’t much room for customization.

If you’ve ever tried to develop a low-code, template-based mobile app, you might have an idea.

While these models and platforms allow users to quickly get started with the application, the end products often lack various features that can be essential for your business.

Other than that, even the most minor changes, including graphics and visual updates, can require an unusual amount of additional work. This makes low cost applications a less preferred option by businesses.

3. Low-code approach makes scaling and updating more expensive

Unlike custom code apps, reduced code apps have fewer customization options, which we just mentioned. But is this the end of the problem?

A low-code application is often susceptible to problems when it comes time to scale or update.

For example, the template you used to build the app may stop future support for that particular product line. Or, the latest model updates may not be a good fit for your purpose. Additionally, a template-based app will put limits on your business’s creativity and productivity, keeping the app locked into the same design and feature set.

4. Safety and reliability can be a concern

Over the past ten years, more than 300 data breaches have occurred, causing an overall loss of over 100,000 records.

The amount of data lost and leaked can run into tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, inflicting severe damage on businesses across industries.

One of the main reasons that data attacks become easier is the lack of security that low-code platforms can offer.

This mainly happens for the following reasons:

  • You or your development partner did not write the code, so it cannot be trusted for its reliability.
  • Developers of low-code models can eliminate security features that may not hinder the normal functioning of the application, but can leave loopholes for a cyber attack.

However, when you hire a full-cycle application development services company, the team guarantees the delivery of a fully customized product according to your company’s preferences and security requirements.

5. Integration challenges

Another downside to using low-code platforms is their lack of integrability with other existing tools and software that your business is currently using.

Most low-code platforms have several limitations on what changes you can make to the output. In addition, to make these changes, the developer will need the know-how of the platform used.

This makes integration a challenge. Even though the integration of such a grade is possible and supported by a low-code platform, finding the way forward can be difficult because all platforms work differently.

Speaking of custom code development, it leaves enough room for seamless integration with your existing software.

6. Low-code applications can reduce efficiency

Most low-code applications are designed with several flaws, due to lack of customization. This means that several useful features may be missing from the app. Or the design preferences may not be optimal or as required.

These factors can go a long way in reducing the overall effectiveness of your team.

As your business application is not performing optimally, your employees may need to step in to guide your users, make changes, or simply manage the mess created by the low-code counterpart.

Building a custom code app on the first try will save you the hassle. In addition, a personalized application will be designed and developed according to the specific needs of your business and your target audience.

It can help your business make a connection with its prospects.

7. User lockout issues

As a low-code platform is ready by its developers, we don’t have full access to how the platform works.

In the event of data loss or vendor or user lockdown, your business may simply find itself helpless or too dependent on the developers of the platform. This can lead to mistrust or dissatisfaction, accompanied by panic among your users.

In a custom code application, your team of developers or development partner will be able to make the required changes as a priority.
